We just got a mention from Dale Winton on Radio 2

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Even after nine years in radio myself, still find it exciting to get an email read out!

We can add Dale to the Publicity Heaven Radio 2 mentions checklist. Steve Wright, Jeremy Vine and Chris Evans… all ticked.

Just need Ken Bruce and Wogan and we’ll have a full house of daytime presenters… hey, whatever gets you through the day…

Your website address must be simple

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Just listened to a successful interview done by a man seeking publicity for his charity on a local radio station.

He got his point across OK and created a demand within me the listener to learn more. But when the interviewer asked him to give out his website address, he screwed it up.

The address he gave was “www.bobscharity.wordpress.something.icantremember.org.uk/badgers”… or something utterly forgettable like that.

What he should have said of course was “www.bobscharity.com”. That would have cost what, £10 a year to buy?

Yes you could rely on Google searches. But really, to be remembered, your website address must be small, easy to remember and relevant to your subject matter.

Also remember that spelling website addresses doesn’t work on radio. If your website is “newsoftheweak”, when DJs read it out some people will hear “newsoftheweek”.

Get everything prepared before you start

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

The breakfast presenter on one of our local radio stations has just been talking about a new shop she spotted on the drive to work today.

It hasn’t opened yet but it’s exciting her… apparently its name suggests it’s a shop selling handmade chocolate.

And she said the website address was splashed all over the window. But when she visited the website, there was nothing there! Guess what – the shop didn’t get a name check on air.

What a wasted publicity opportunity for a new shop.

It’s not difficult to make sure everything is ready before you start. Don’t give out your website address till you have a website there. You have one chance for first time visitors, and that applies to ordinary people as well as journalists.

Tuesday is a great day for free publicity

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

When I was news editor of a radio station, I hated the day after bank holidays. You were grumpy after a nice long weekend, and there was never any news about.

The day after a bank holiday is a fantastic day to send a great press release.

Don’t miss this opportunity!

‘Local heroes’ is a great move for Gordon

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

A great publicity move by Gordon Brown today (MediaGuardian, free registration required).

He’s announced he wants local newspapers and radio stations to get their readers and listeners to nominate local heroes for the honours’ list.

Not only could this kill off the cash for honours scandal and produce a more deserving list of winners, but Brown is acknowledging how important and powerful the local media still is.

The trick to get coverage in the local media is to generate great story ideas that are relevant to their target audience – local people. That’s exactly what he’s done here.

Good work.
