Press release distribution: UK media outlets that you might not have thought of

By Publicity Heaven writer Susan Connolly

Once you have written your press release, you need effective press release distribution to get it in front of the right journalists. When you think about where to send your press release, it’s easy to come up with the big newspapers and magazines, but these are not your only options for press release distribution.

There are thousands of UK media outlets. They nclude many smaller publications that may be a better vehicle for your press release. After all, smaller, more niche media will not receive as much contact from businesses, so your press release may get more attention and be more likely to be used as the basis for an article.

1) Think local
You should always send your press releases to your local newspapers, television programmes and radio shows. Journalists here are always looking for interesting stories from local businesses. Even if you’re not aiming at a local audience, getting some local media can give your business enhanced credibility and couild even be a step up to more valuable national publicity. Make sure to mention your community ties and locality to the area when you submit your press release to these media outlets.

2) Find your niche
While it may seem that the wider your exposure, the better it will be for your business, targeting niche publications can pay off in a big way. After all, a trade magazine is targeted at those who are interested in the area your business serves and so the percentage of potential customers is much higher amongst those readers than readers of a ‘bigger’ publication. Your targets are not limited to your exact business area. Try to think of other niche publications whose readers might be interested in your press release. For example, a plumbing business should not only focus on plumbing publications, but also more general building magazines or even those focused on small businesses and entrepreneurship.

3) Get online
Online-only publications don’t just include personal blogs and forums. Many reputable publications, especially in technology fields, do not have a print version at all. Large, respected blogs are read by huge numbers of people, and a mention of your business or products on these websites could drive a wave of traffic to your website as well as spreading news of your business to others if links to the article are shared by readers. This can be especially good for you if you have an online store, as readers can quickly read about your business, find the online store and make a purchase. By targeting websites for press release distribution, UK business owners can reach an international audience and expand their market. You can also gain an advantage over competitors who have not embraced the digital age.

Your choices for where to distribute your press release can be as important as the time you spent selecting the story and writing the text. Next time you are sending out a press release, try out some of these suggestions and you may be very happy with the outcome.
