3 proven ideas to generate publicity for your business
By Paul Green
Often the thing that stops business owners trying to get free publicity is not knowing what kind of stories journalists are interested in.
Busy reporters will get hundreds of story ideas sent to them every day and so can afford to be very picky about which stories they will cover.
There’s every chance you feel there’s nothing that exciting happening in your business… certainly nothing that the outside world would be interested in
That’s OK. You can use these three ideas to easily generate publicity for your business:
1) Do a survey: People’s opinions on things can provide an interesting angle for a story, especially if it’s something new or shocking. Open any newspaper or magazine and you’ll see the results of surveys run by businesses. Don’t try to squeeze a commercial message into your survey; no media title will run a survey that says two out of three people surveyed would buy your product. But they might run one which says two out of three would prefer to deal with a company that’s on Twitter.
2) Analyse data already in your business: Look through your customer and sales records and see if you can spot changing trends. Often businesses know how customer preferences are changing before the media does. By telling the media you can get yourself a valuable mention in the media.
3) Piggyback the news: When something is already in the news, it’s much easier to generate publicity by piggybacking it. Journalists are hungry for new angles on existing stories, and you are helping them out. A great example right now would be for an accountant to offer a free expenses-checking service for MPs! With a funny web page that could make an amusing angle on the expenses scandal.
