Using a salad to market your food

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

So in the news today, some pre-packed salads have as much salt as a Big Mac (pity they’re not as tasty).

The reason this is news is because we all assume salads are healthier than burgers. The story goes against convention.

Here’s how to generate some publicity if you serve food in your business.

Declare to your local media that you are the first local restaurant/cafe/canteen to publish on your website the full ingredient list and nutritional details of every dish served. Make sure the details are online before you tell anyone… it’s not good enough to declare an intention.

Not only are you demonstrating how good and healthy your food is, but you are driving lots of local people directly to your website! Hooray! Make sure it’s easy for them to contact you through the site. You could even publish recipes, so people can try to make your meals at home.

PS Shouldn’t have to be said, but nonetheless… this stunt will backfire badly and destroy your business if you serve horribly unhealthy food.

‘Local heroes’ is a great move for Gordon

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

A great publicity move by Gordon Brown today (MediaGuardian, free registration required).

He’s announced he wants local newspapers and radio stations to get their readers and listeners to nominate local heroes for the honours’ list.

Not only could this kill off the cash for honours scandal and produce a more deserving list of winners, but Brown is acknowledging how important and powerful the local media still is.

The trick to get coverage in the local media is to generate great story ideas that are relevant to their target audience – local people. That’s exactly what he’s done here.

Good work.

How to get rid of cold callers

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Very off-topic, but I just made myself laugh with a 7 second unwanted cold sales call:

Phone rings

Me: Good afternoon Publicity Heaven

Caller: Hello, is that Mr P M Green of Publicity Heaven

Me: Er… yes.

Caller: Fantastic. My name’s Bob, I’m calling from XYZ Ltd, we work with Royal Mail, and I’m calling to see if you are making the most of the benefits offered to you by Royal Mail

Me: Yes I am.

Caller: Oh… bye then.

Magazine readers are a good source of word of mouth publicity

Friday, July 6th, 2007

The time and effort it can sometimes take to get into magazines is worth it.

There’s a story on The Wise Marketer (free registration required) which sasya a study has found magazine readers are more likely to be advocates of products they read about in a magazine.

The study focused on Stuff magazine. Some highlights:

  • Stuff readers surveyed were 72% more likely to have made a recommendation regarding technology in the last 12 months
  • 83% of Stuff readers encouraged at least one person to act on their recommendation compared to only 45% of non-readers
  • For the technology category, 81% of Stuff readers are influencers

Prepare for the summer opportunity now

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

August is a great publicity opportunity for your business.

Loads of people are on holidays because their kids are off school.

That means less news ideas flowing into the media. It’s not called silly season for nothing.

It presents an opportunity for you to send a cracking story idea, and potentially get more coverage out of it than you could any other time of year.

Don’t wait till mid-August to take advantage of this. Plan it now and have it ready to go in early August.

PS Don’t worry that there will be fewer listeners / readers… there will still be plenty of people to see and hear your message.
