Richard Branson’s stunt didn’t attract attention

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Apparently Richard Branson did a publicity stunt last week, that barely registered on the radar. That’s what the Media Guardian says (register free to see this).

No wonder – from someone like Branson, what a weak stunt! A few hours sat in a box… yawn… local radio stations do more exciting things.

Image if he’d spent an entire WEEK in a box. Or been in there with some celebrities (from his TV channels). To be fair, you can’t image many billionaires doing this.

But Branson is the King of Publicity, and should have realised this wasn’t going to top any of his previous stunts.

Sending readers into space is a great publicity stunt

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

OK, so you might not be able to send one of your customers into space. But in a world where everyone has a competition, this one really stands out. And it’s highly relevant to the product (New Scientist).

What’s your most expensive product – can you give one away – can you add a twist to it that makes it highly unusual, even more desirable, and likely to generate talk?

Last Harry Potter book is great PR opportunity

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

So, the last ever Harry Potter book will be published on July 21st. You need to start planning now to ensure your business gets publicity from what is going to be a huge event. I went to a midnight book shop opening when the last one launched, and it was huge – I simply could not believe how many people and photographers were there!

If you have a book store, you need to work especially hard on this to ensure you are doing osmething bigger and better than the chain stores. If you own a business near a book store, ask yourself if a crowd of excited people stood outside your shop for an hour before the book is launched, will buy whatever you are selling (and that’s a definite yes if you sell food & drink).

If you have a business that’s totally unrelated, what else could you do? Could you do a competition to give away the first place in the queue at your local bookshop? Could you publish a list of the top 10 guesses for the last sentence of the book? Could you start a character death sweepstake?

You’ve got plenty of time till the launch, but you need to have your plans in place soon to ensure you beat the competition.
