How to look for publicity opportunities

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

Looking for publicity opportunities is easy thanks to the internet. I use an RSS reader to monitor several websites’ content in one place. RSS, which is explained best by the BBC, allows you to scan the headlines for several sites without actually visiting them.

This makes it simple for me to keep a look out for publicity opportunities for several of our clients who prefer a more reactive approach.

RSS will become more important over the next 12 months. It is built into the new Windows Vista, so those sites who don’t do feeds yet will be forced to introduce them. That includes this site – I’m having this blog moved to Wordpress soon, so we can take advantage of RSS feeds, plus other features like commenting, permalinks etc.

PS The RSS reader I use is Protopage. It’s simple, drag and drop, and web based, meaning I can use it from any computer in the world.

The Heart Attack Grill

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

I love this guy and his grasp of marketing excellence. Jon Basso runs the Heart Attack Grill in the States – THE place to go if you want an 8,000 calorie burger, full fat beer and unfiltered cigarettes. He does it precisely to trigger controversy – and awareness. He has a clear market leading position, and I bet he’s making a fortune from it. I’d love to see a restaurant in the UK do something similar; not necessarily the same idea, but something so outrageous people can’t help talk about it.

UPDATE: Actually, thinking about it, the main reason my wife and I went to Archipeligo in London was to eat insects. Yum.

Getting publicity round the mobile phone ban

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

With the new mobile phone laws for drivers coming in today, anyone involved with phones or driving should have had something in place ready to capitalise on this morning’s news.

If you sell hands free car kits, produce a simple free guide explaining the law to everyone who visits your website.

If you install hands free car kits, produce a warning document telling the user they may still be prosecuted – and then publicise that you are doing that, to ensure every driver knows the risks.

If you sell mobile phones, launch a “campaign” to get people to switch their mobiles off in the car. Give a free mobile or accessory to everyone who signs the “Mobile Off Pledge”.

If you are involved in trying to stop speeding drivers in your village, launch a campaign to spot and report drivers on the phone. That’s unusual and should attract some media attention.

St George’s Day publicity idea

This is a good idea to generate publicity. It certainly got Ian Botham a 5 minute slot with Chris Evans on Radio 2 last night.
