A vicar in a hardhat

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Spent the weekend in London and saw two different organisations getting publicity in the same way – by doing something you didn’t expect.

The first was handyman.co.uk. They had someone driving an unusual-looking truck through central London… the truck was heavily branded, had one of those bubble machines on board, and had the driver singing through a PA system! Highly unusual, got loads of attention, and with such a simple website address I’m sure many people went home and looked it up.

The other was St Martins in the Field church, which is undergoing refurbishments and needs to raise more money. As the below picture shows, they avoided being ‘just another hoarding hiding refurbishments’ by putting a photo of a vicar in a hardhat on the hoardings. Brilliant!

Pick the title of the next James Bond book

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

Now here’s a clever publicity idea. The publishers of the young James Bond books are letting the fans decide what the title of the next book should be. What a great way to get the customers involved in the product. Could you do that somehow with your business?

A friend of mine who works for a major radio group says a few years ago they got the chance to name the new girl group being formed on telly – the group that went on to be Girls Aloud. I don’t think any of the radio people came up with that name, but it got them thinking about the group for a few days while they were coming up with games. Clever.

An easy way to keep up-to-date with newspaper changes

Wednesday, October 4th, 2006

ke any project, you need to do research on your target media when you start trying to get publicity. I’ve just found a very very handy tool on a website called Hold the Front Page. This is the news website for the regional press, and contains a very handy search feature which gathers the news stories it has written about newspaper title.

A very organised way to present the information, and ideal for you to keep up with staff changes etc.
